Fighting between government forces and an armed opposition alliance has reached Chad's capital, Ndjamena, with foreigners under armed guard by French forces.
Gunfire and shelling near the presidential palace shook the city and expatriates from France, the UK and US have assembled in hotels before a possible evacuation.
